June 9, 2008, Casa de Elizabeth, Imurís—
An attempted break-in and kidnapping was thwarted by a bolted front door and an army of terrified young boys. The intruders, approximately five armed men, decided to enter through the boys wing after discovering that the front door was dead-bolted. The boys awoke and made enough noise to ward off the group. In the best estimation of the orphanage Director, the intruders had come to kidnap an infant born to one of the young girls in the orphanage, fathered by a member of the local drug ring.
Anticipating the likely return of the intruders, security immediately became a priority. With the exception of a locking front gate, orphange security was almost non-existent—the wall surrounding the main building in the orphanage was in serious disrepair and easily short enough to hop over, and the orphanage had no technology in place to monitor the premises for trespassers.
Proyecto Compasión met with San Francisco based Singles Serving Orphans who graciously donated the funds to purchase and install a high-quality multi-camera system, and to take a trip down to CDE to repair and heighten the wall around CDE's main building. Proyecto Compasión made an emergency contribution to purchase materials for the construction of the wall. Fortunately, nobody was hurt during the invasion, and the targeted child and mother were relocated to a secure location.
